My name is Alexa Brentlea Pinter and I am a first year Agriculture Communications major at Cal Poly, set to graduate in June of 2021. I was born in Omaha, Nebraska, but my whole memorable life was spent growing up in Visalia, California. When I was growing up, I aspired to be a large animal veterinarian but somewhere along the line, those aspirations changed. I realized as much as I loved animals, I loved agriculture as a whole as well as human interaction.
Eventually, the thought of working without human interaction seemed a daunting task that I did not know if I could handle. At this point in time I started searching for a new pathway to feed my time and future into.
Around this time, my family had the amazing opportunity to purchase a ranch in San Luis Obispo, California with a family friend. We purchased a ranch with the purpose of utilizing the vines on site to run as a winery. Unfortunately, we purchased in a drought and the vines were not going to suffice as an income, fortunately, we knew that the wedding business was growing in the area.
As we converted our ranch, Higuera Ranch, into a wedding venue I had the unique opportunity to be a part in the process. In doing this, I was “marrying” my love of agriculture and event planning (pun intended). This is how I came to the conclusion, when applying to Cal Poly, that Agriculture Communications was the major for me.
Through my major I learn a diverse knowledge in all aspects of agriculture as well as in journalism, communications and much more. Between the vast array of knowledge that I am learning and will soon be learning I plan to be career ready right out of college.
I will be beginning a blog series, on behalf of my Journalism 205 class, Agricultural Communications Journalism. For this class, we are faced with the task of selecting a crop and blogging about it focusing on something grown in California.
As my crop I will be writing a blog on blueberries. Throughout the course of the class and blog, I plan to explain various aspects of blueberries from their growth, processing, consumption and more.
Through my blog, I hope to not only build my own portfolio and experience, but inform the general public on the various aspects of blueberries. Growing up in an agriculturally strong area, I understand what I consider the basic concepts of agriculture and hope to dispose some of the unknowns and discrepancies in more urbanized areas.
